Abou-Trika offers Gaza help

By Hatem Maher
First Published: January 1, 2009

Ahly playmaker Mohamed Abou-Trika said he and his teammates were willing to do anything to ease the misery of Gaza people following Israel's bombardment of the strip.

"We are eager to help all Gazans," Abou-Trika told Ahly's official website late on Wednesday.

"I suggest that Ahly or Egypt play against a high-profile team, then we could use the amount of money generated to support the families of Palestinian victims.

"We need Ahly, the Egyptian Football Association or any private foundation to take the initiative of organizing such an event."

More than 300 Palestinians have been killed and hundreds injured since the Israeli air force launched dozens of air raids on the Hamas-ruled Gaza strip.

On the other hand, Hamas' rocket barrages killed four Israelis so far.

Supporting Shirt

During Egypt's 3-0 Nations Cup victory over Sudan in January 2008, Abou-Trika unfolded a shirt with the slogan 'sympathize with Gaza' typed on it.

At that time, thousands of Palestinians crossed the Egyptian border after Israel imposed a blockade on the Gaza Strip.

Confederation of African Football (CAF) consequently warned him of displaying any political slogan.

"I would wear that shirt everyday if that was the solution," the 30-year-old said, who is nominated for the CAF Player of the Year Award, said.

"I call on all Egyptians and Muslims over the world to pray for the Palestinians."
